Many users have asked how to separate their data files from their installation directory for backup purposes. This is a walk-through of the changes that are necessary for PMMail to function properly with the data files split.
This is a variation from the information contained in the included help file and will be updated there with the next build of PMMail. The only difference here is that you are not required to move the PMMailw.INI file (tested on win2k/XP).
First, create a 'root' directory for your PMMail files (eg. if your backup folder is C:\data, create C:\data\mail\pmmail)The 'root' for your PMMail data will need to contain 2 different folders, you will be copying your current Tools folder from your current PMMail 2000 installation directory into the C:datamail folder.
Now, move your data files, (from inside of the PMMail 2000 directory of the current installation) all *.ACT folders to the new data storage location. You can copy the PMMailw.hlp and PMMailw.cnt files as well, or you can point to them on the first use. You do NOT need to move your PMMailw.INI file.
Once you have all of the data moved over, your directory should look like this:
Note that the Tools folder was simply moved from your current installation.

Now to point PMMail to this new location. For ALL shortcuts that point to your PMMail installation, make the following changes:
Right click the PMMail shorcut icon and select .
Change the Start in directory to "C:\data\mail\pmmail" (including quotes)
To update the registry so that mailto: links will work properly, open the registry (Start menu->Run->regedit) and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blueprint Software Works\PMMail
Change the ShellDirectory entry to include your new data directory (C:\data\mail\pmmail)
Remember, you MUST
a)move all *.ACT folders to the new location
b)move the Tools folder from your current installation in order to access your address book and spell checker files.
c)edit the registry string in order for the mailto: links to work
Note: This works equally well using network paths, but may cause PMMail to respond slowly depending on network connections and traffic.
We cannot be responsible for any data lost by editing the registry or by altering the default installation of PMMail 2000. This is simply a guide of what changes need to be made and not a recommended installation.
